Save Our Hub – Faith in Action Needs Your Help

The Merton Homelessness Project is facing a critical challenge as our hub's future is at risk. We urgently need the community's support to secure our space and ensure we can continue providing a lifeline, hot meals, and essential support to those in need.

The Faith in Action (FiA) Merton Homelessness Project has been a lifeline for the most vulnerable people in our community for years. Today, that lifeline is under threat. The Salvation Army has informed us of their intention to serve a notice to quit. This means FiA could be forced to vacate our home at the Salvation Army Hall on Kingston Road as early as the end of November this year.

Why this building is irreplaceable

The Salvation Army Hall is not just a roof over our heads; it is a specialised hub designed to restore dignity to people in crisis. Finding a new location is not as simple as moving into a vacant church hall or office space. To serve 60+ people every session, the project relies on the specific, high-quality facilities this building already provides:

  • A Commercial Kitchen: Where dedicated volunteers cook nutritious hot breakfasts and full two-course lunches.
  • Hygiene Facilities: Plumbed-in hot showers and private toilets that allow guests to clean up, shave, and maintain their dignity.
  • Laundry Services: Industrial washing machines and dryers to ensure people have access to clean, dry clothes, a basic necessity often taken for granted.
  • A Central Hub: A location in Merton with excellent transport links. Many service users are on foot, so staying in an accessible area is vital.

Without this specific infrastructure, many individuals will be left out in the elements, facing the dangers of the street and harsh weather without a safe haven to turn to.

A Future Worth Fighting For

FiA does more than just provide immediate relief. Last year alone, the project provided intensive casework for 74 unique individuals, helping them find a real pathway home. This is not just about a meal; it is about providing a future. While the search for alternative premises is underway, the current focus is on persuading the Salvation Army to reverse their decision. This is a "Herculean task" that requires the strength of the entire community.

How to Help Right Now

The most powerful way to help is to demonstrate the scale of community support for FiA. We must prove to the decision-makers that this hub is an indispensable asset to Merton.

Thank you for standing with Faith in Action and the homeless and vulnerably-housed people of Merton.
