About us

The Project

Faith in Action grew from collaboration between local faith groups across the London borough of Merton.

  • Merton Homeless Drop-in

Open every Wednesday and Friday, our Homeless Drop-in welcomes around 50-60 homeless and vulnerably-housed local people. We offer hot drinks, breakfast, a two-course hot lunch, internet access, advice and support from our own professional staff team, supported by a dedicated team of around 50 volunteers and access to third-party local agencies and services. Rough sleepers can also access showers and laundry, donated clothes and food parcels.

  • Merton Winter Night Shelter

We are also home to the Merton Winter Night Shelter. The shelter provides emergency accommodation for 12-14 people experiencing homelessness, between December and mid-March. Teams of faith group volunteers, around 360 in total, provide a vital service for people across a dozen hosting venues in the borough.

Stories from our service users

JOHN, a successful engineer with a family, faced a traumatic marriage breakdown that left him homeless and struggling with alcohol. In Autumn 2023, he visited our Homeless Drop-in, where staff and volunteers treated him with respect. He could shower, find clean clothes, and leave feeling 'like a normal person.' He then stayed at our Winter Night Shelter, providing safety during the cold months. FiA staff worked closely with him, connecting him with the local drug and alcohol team and a visiting mental health nurse. These professionals use the Drop-in to reach homeless individuals. John completed steps for residential treatment and was driven by staff to a rehabilitation centre, beginning his journey toward a fresh start.

PATRICIA came into the Drop-In in a very distressed state. She was to be evicted from the room where she was staying and had nowhere else to go. FiA has partnerships with many specialist organisations which run sessions at the Drop-In, and Patricia was able to see a specialist housing lawyer straight away. The lawyer acted immediately and identified that the eviction was not legal. The eviction was stopped, and Patricia was able to return to her accommodation temporarily. The same specialist lawyer helped her apply for permanent accommodation, where she could build a new life and feel secure.

Serena is a European national who has been living and working in the UK for over ten years. When she reappeared at the Drop-In it was clear that she was suffering mental ill-health and was sleeping rough. Serena started attending regularly and slowly we began to build trust with her. One defining moment happened when the bicycle she used to transport her belongings was damaged. She was taken to a local bicycle repair shop where her bike was duly condemned as unsafe. But on learning her situation the shop owner very generously produced an almost identical bike and sold it to us at cost. It took a while for her to understand that it was now hers but when she did, her face lit up with delight. The mental health nurse who, along with the council outreach worker, regularly attends the Drop-In, confirmed that she had been detained under the Mental Health Act in the past. The council worker immediately placed her in temporary accommodation where she remains today. When she pops back to see us she tells us that she ‘loves’ her accommodation. Serena is being supported to apply for identification documents and to claim the benefits she may be entitled to.

RICHARD used his time in the safe space of our Winter Night Shelter to study and gained his Level 3 Bookkeeping and Level 2 Forklifting qualifications, subsequently being offered a job in a warehouse. The extended Night Shelter period funded by the Mayor of London's Spring Transition Fund allowed Richard to settle into work and start saving. This meant that by the time the Shelter closed in May, Richard had found and moved into accommodation near his work. He hopes to continue with his studies and achieve his goal of becoming an accountant.
